Shiny New WP Mobile Plugin from Wapple: 30 Minute Job and Bosh – Mobile a Go-Go!
DISCLAIMER: We work with Wapple, but this isn’t an ad – just a shout out for a very cool service.
Three weeks ago the C&M (Wordpress) site ran like a dog on iPhones and Androids alike (and a total rat on a Nokia 3300 Classic).
We were planning to give it a spot of mobile TLC in the new year but the good people at mobile web development company Wapple – who we’ve been working with on and off in the past year – kindly stepped in with a ’30 minute makeover’ offer last week. So we took them up on it, gave them a login, and ….bosh!

It really is a funky piece of software as well as being free and pretty easy to use. The Mobile Architect for Wordpress is essentially a stripped down version of its Architect product which takes a site’s existing content, does a spot of wizardry behind the scenes and then presents it in an altogether more mobile-friendly format.
I won’t pretend to understand the technical sprockets, but basically our web site now identifies a visitor’s device and serves them the most appropriate version of our content: desktop users get the normal site, mobile users get the site you can see in the picture above – and all from the same domain. (This last point is particularly handy as it means all of our web marketing and Social/PR/optimisation efforts only need to be focused on one place.)
The backoffice enables you to tweak which content you serve to mobile users. We’ve plumped for a combination of our most important static pages and a straight feed of our blog. The result is great – a really simple, predominantly text-based, interface with easy cues for navigation at the top and bottom of the page. We could also add a splash of mobile-specific styling to the mix, but for now we’ve kept it sparse.
Here’s a quick view of the kind of stuff that goes on in the WP interface. Simple fields for SEO, styling and content presentation:

This really isn’t meant to be an ad for a client – it’s more of a thank you to Anne Thomas (@bacefook) and Rich Gubby of Wapple who did all the geeky bits for us. In our book, 30 mins worth of effort for a cracking mobile service is worth getting excited and spreading the word about. We love this app, not least because the Mobile Interweb is such a critical part of web marketing life now.
Thanks guys – it looks like we’re not the only people to be gushing right now. Rich – are you a Watchman in disguise? : ) Keep up the great work…
