The C&M 2009 New Year Resolutions (For Doing Online PR Better)
We have two…
i) Get Some History
We know that none of this new-fangled Interweb and social media marketing stuff is really that new. We’re dealing with old habits in new domains – conversations, excitement, networking, etc.
We’re not really that interested in creating new unified theories for this brave new world (as recent times have demonstrated, ‘sharp predictions’ can be a dangerous thing) – we’re more concerned with devising a bunch of practical methods and tools for doing our stuff really well.
This means being transparent in what we do, and making it as useful and measurable as possible for our clients. For this reason we intend to get a little more history, in order to understand what’s worked well (and what hasn’t) in previous new world orders.
Claude Hopkins is a good place to start. As is David Ogilvy (more of whom here). Both these people based their work on sound research, analysis and reporting. We’ll do likewise.
ii) Less Haste
There’s an old phrase “More Haste, Less Speed,” that I’ve been using more and more just lately …because the work that we do is becoming increasingly uncontrollable.
I don’t mean uncontrollable in terms of output – we’ll always be responsible for that …I mean in terms of input. We Tweet most of the day and night, and our base working material is a never-ending fire hose of web content. This means that it’s hard not to work.
But we have to – otherwise our work suffers… a lot. We crash and burn and our ideas become stale. C&M is a smart shop: we produce creative, practical solutions to web marketing and online PR problems. We can’t do this unless we’re fresh.
So, 2009 will be the year of working smarter: eight hours a day max; time for family; time for cat naps; time for research; time for preparation before the next meeting / call / etc; lots of time for thinking; and generally Less Haste…

Say Hello to Paul, Our Very Affable New Head of Accounts
As our original ad for the role stated, Paul’s job is to be more Mad Men than IM, Twitter, Foursquare and the rest. His job is to talk to all of our clients – preferably at a distance of three paces, and to get the Martinis in whenever they’re needed. Oh, and to always have a glowing report to hand.
Why do 95.769% of Social Media Projects Fail? PLANNING!
In C&M’s experience, failure to deliver value on Social Media projects is 95.769% down to the lack of a plan. Why? Because 95.6579% of the time Social Media is seen as free
