Preamble (Ramble) to Twestival (Brightwest in Particular)…
We’re sponsoring the bar down @Brightwest tonight – in the heart of Brighton, probably one of the world’s most passionate outposts of the global Twestival Smackdown today. It’s getting late here what with one thing and another, but before I cashed in my bar chips I wanted to set down why I think Twestival is important…
- Twestival a brilliant example of the connectedness of all this social stuff. The organisers have brought together a global mass of people in the name of fun and charity – extremely quickly and at a relatively low cost (although I’m sure they’ve not had a great deal of R&R in the last few weeks!). It’s living proof of the power of Twitter as a mobilisation tool.
- Although most of the mainstream media has been making a hash of explaining what the hell’s so interesting about Twitter of late, Twestival shows us that Twitter is so much more than a blog-lite tool for brain farts or a PR’s spam machine. It’s a web app that’s redefining how we communicate personally and in the corporate sphere. Twitter is direct. It works best when you connect with somebody personally. It allows you to follow a loosely joined set of people, and get to know them and share stuff with them. Twestival has worked because it’s got people off their butts in a very direct fashion. In recent weeks I’ve been invited down to Brightwest by a stack of great folks who I’ve never spoken to before. And this sense of purpose and inclusivity has been really welcome – I’m going to share a beer with them tonight. This is a very different approach to the way we communicated yesterday. No need to beg for permission to speak, write lengthy letters or hijack media space with attention grabbing adverts. Just go find people and connect with them. From a communications standpoint, what could be better? This sense of directness also brings with it some new rules for Tweeting: only the interesting will survive and a lack of charisma will be fatal. When the world’s on Twitter, everyone is openly accessible… but messages are very, very easy to filter out.
Anyways, ramble over. I’ve got a charitable bar tab to pick up. Enjoy tonight : )
